A Review Literature on Communication in Nurses

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review journal articles on nurses¡¯ communication in order to identify overall trends in nursing communication and to suggest strategies to improve communication education.

Methods: Research that analyzed communication were selected from journal articles in Korea from 2004 to 2013 and were reviewed, except review articles. A total of 33 articles were collected.

Results: Most research studies used a non-experimental design. Communication ability was measured by various instruments; Global Interpersonal Communication Competency (GICC), Primary Communication Inventory (PCI), ICU Nurse-Physician Questionnaire, communication type, satisfaction, facilitative communication. Nurses¡¯ communication was found to be related to organizational commitment, self leadership, critical thinking, self-esteem, professional competency and burnout. General characteristics of nurses, including age, education, marital status, position, and practice on experience of psychiatric nursing practice were also associated with communication.

Conclusion: These results will be used to provide basic data for nursing leaders. The next phase of research on communication will require use of various approaches and research methods and indicate directions for further research.
